Star Wars: Temuera Morrison Wants to Star in a Captain Rex Spinoff

Temuera Morrison is looking to move away from playing Boba Fett, Jango Fett, and all his Clone Trooper roles from the Star Wars prequels. His sights have shifted to something more mature and grizzled. The New Zealand actor is hoping to do a Captain Rex spinoff soon.

Although Temuera Morrison portrayed clones of Jango Fett in the Star Wars films, voice actor Dee Bradley Baker took on the role in animation when the series The Clone Wars and others were released. One of these characters was Captain Rex, a clone who was able to bypass the impulsive programming of Order 66 and preserve his freedom to think independently. This clone was featured prominently in The Clone Wars and also made an appearance in Star Wars Rebels with Baker still doing the voiceover. However, he has yet to debut in a live-action movie, which Morrison views as a chance.

At Supanova Comic-Con in Melbourne, Morrison was interviewed by Dexerto and proposed his idea for a Captain Rex project. He simply stated that he’d like to take part in a Star Wars story featuring one of the clones. Morrison is already a familiar face in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, but he still finds the clones intriguing and would consider returning to the franchise.

Morrison chuckled as he recalled his portrayal of a homeless veteran Clone Trooper in Obi-Wan Kenobi, saying, “Credits please! That was fun, so I’d like to do something similar, but we’ll see what the powers that be decide.” He then spoke of the Star Wars clones’ dark future after The Clone Wars and their untapped storytelling potential, noting that while The Bad Batch has already explored that part of their tale, it still hasn’t been given a proper live-action treatment.

Questions have been raised concerning the potential return of Captain Rex for the Ahsoka series, given the strong bond between him and the title character in The Clone Wars. Having Morrison appear onscreen as a grizzled veteran would be a delight for fans. However, there haven’t been any reports of him being cast for the show, which usually gets leaked. Therefore, while it would be fun, it is probably not wise to wager on it.

Despite that, Star Wars has been known to keep even tight-lipped secrets in the past. Fans were taken by surprise when they saw Temuera Morrison featured as Boba Fett in season 2 of The Mandalorian. Additionally, no one expected to see Jack Black and Lizzo make an appearance. There’s still a chance that Morrison could have already played Rex in a mysterious manner, making him become fond of the character. After all, that is a recurrent theme in Star Wars stories.
